Revisions in IE Curriculum
With help from Will Taylor and Sandra Serkownek, the IAB Curriculum Committee helped to develop a survey that
was conducted during fall 2008 semester. Recent graduates of the program were asked for comments on the following
two curriculum changes being considered by the faculty.
- Reduce the statistics sequence from three to two courses by combining topics from ISE3220, Design of Experiments
and ISE4230, Quality Control into a single course and increase the number of technical electives to two courses.
- What is the appropriate prerequisite level of programming experience for the ISE 3800 Information Systems for Industrial
Engineering course (including the language requirement)?
Eliminating the first programming course was recommended by recent graduates as well as juniors in the program
over the last two years.
Comments on the proposal to combine the design of experiments and the quality course were consistent with faculty sentiments. Historically, an emphasis on statistical methods has been a signature of the program. The tradeoff was that students need an opportunity to have depth as well as breadth in a discipline topic. Both changes were submitted to the University Curriculum Committee and received approval to be effective for the spring 2009 semester.
